BMW, an essential market for chiptuning
BMW F-platform (F20, F30, F80, F10, F15...) and G-platform (G20, G80, G30, G05...) models represent a significant part of the activity of remapping professionals in France. B48, B58, N55, N20, S55, S58, N57 engines: each engine has its specificities in terms of ECU, supported protocols, and compatible tools.
This guide helps you choose the right tool from our catalog based on the BMWs you work with daily.
F Series (2011-2019): The widest coverage
BMW F Series primarily use Bosch MEVD17.2, MG1CS003, MG1CS201 (petrol) and Bosch EDC17 (diesel) ECUs. These are well-documented ECUs, supported for a long time by the two main tools on the market.
KESS3: complete OBD and Bench coverage for all F series engines. The KESS3 benefits from the KESSv2 legacy on this platform, with a very mature database. OBD and Bench protocols are stable and proven. View Alientech range.
Autotuner: equivalent OBD and Bench coverage. The Autotuner stands out for often faster read/write speeds on Bosch MG1 thanks to its optimized protocol. View Autotuner range.
For the F series, both tools do the job without difficulty. The choice depends on your software preferences and existing ecosystem.
G Series (2019-present): Beware of enhanced protections
With the G series, BMW has strengthened ECU protections. Bosch MG1CS201, MD1CP002, MD1CP032 ECUs integrate security mechanisms that complicate OBD access on the most recent models.
On G20/G30 models up to around 2021, OBD access remains functional with KESS3 and Autotuner. Beyond that, it is often necessary to switch to Bench or Boot, which requires removing the ECU from the vehicle.
This is where the choice of tool can make a difference: Bench/Boot protocol updates for recent BMW ECUs do not always arrive at the same time for Alientech and Autotuner. Check the exact compatibility of your target model before investing.
High-performance engines: S55 and S58
M3/M4 (F80 with S55, G80 with S58) are high-potential remapping targets. The S55 is well covered by both tools in OBD and Bench. The S58 (G80/G82) generally requires Bench access with the latest firmware updates.
For these engines, a positioning frame and a suitable Bench cable set are essential in addition to the main tool.
BMW Diesel: N57 and B57
BMW diesel engines (N57, B47, B57) use Bosch EDC17 and MD1 ECUs. OBD coverage is excellent on both tools for N47/N57. B47/B57 on the G platform may require Bench access depending on the model year.
Essential complementary equipment
To work confidently on BMWs, beyond the remapping tool, plan for:
A quality battery maintainer (BMWs are very sensitive to voltage drops during read/write operations). A professional-grade OBD cable. A specific BMW Bench adapter if you are working on recent G series. An AC adapter to power the ECU in Bench mode.
All this equipment is available in our catalog.
Our recommendation by model
For a workshop that mainly works on BMWs, both tools are suitable. If you have to choose only one and your fleet is mixed (F and G series), the Autotuner has a slight advantage thanks to its free lifetime updates and its responsiveness to recent BMW protocols. If you are already equipped with an Alientech ecosystem (ECM Titanium, existing Slave files), the KESS3 remains the logical choice to capitalize on your investment.
